CHAPTER 10
Chelsea
I half expected the weather to be bad when I returned to the underworld, but it was far from it. In general, it was nothing like I expected it to be down here.
Baal smiled widely the moment he saw me, causing my stomach to erupt into a fluttering mess. It was going to be hard working with him for the rest of the week when he was having this effect on me. Or at least, it would be hard to do that while trying to keep my hands to myself.
âReady for day two?â he asked.
âI think so,â I said. âBut that depends if we have a day of Kuakets ahead of us.â
He let out a good-natured laugh. âThereâs certainly mischief coming our way, but itâs the good-natured kind. Unless you have anything against foxes.â
âFoxes?â I racked my brain to try and work out which god that might be. âIs it some kind of kitsune god?â
âClose, actually. Huxian.â
âI donât know them.â
âSheâs a Chinese deity who is said to be the embodiment of all fox spirits. If it helps, I do think she has multiple tails.â
âSo I was close with saying a kitsune.â
âYes, but kitsune are Japanese,â he responded.
I nodded. âSo no referring to her that way. Got it.â This was suddenly a lot more complicated than I first thought. I wasnât sure what Iâd expected when heâd told me weâd been photographing gods, but I certainly hadnât thought about precisely who was going to show up. And Iâd vastly underestimated precisely how many gods there actually were.
A flash of orange burst out of the tree line, followed by three more. I assumed they were foxes, but they were moving far too quickly for me to take note of.
A woman appeared behind them, moving with in-built grace that seemed fox-like even from this distance. Even if Baal hadnât already told me what she was, I would have been able to guess.
She approached and gave the two of us a peaceful smile.
âThank you for coming, Huxian,â Baal said.
âThank you for the invitation,â she responded in a melodic voice. She shook her head back, the beautiful long dark hair falling behind her as she did.
I stared at her, unable to tear my gaze away as I thought about how wonderful she was going to be to photograph. There was something captivating about her that I just knew was going to translate well onto camera.
âThis is Chelsea,â Baal said.
âA pleasure,â Huxian responded. âIâm afraid that my foxes donât take direction very well, but Horus assured me it wouldnât be an issue.â
âWe can work around them,â I promised.
Baal smiled and nodded, not seeming in the slightest part annoyed that I was speaking for both of us.
âExcellent.â She turned around and scanned the surrounding oasis. âIs there somewhere youâd like me?â
âChelsea?â Baal asked.
âErm, I think that depends. Iâm sorry, I donât know if itâs rude to ask, but what colour are your tails?â
âWhat colour would you like them to be?â she asked.
My eyes widened. âWe can choose?â
She nodded.
